Over the years, comic books of all kinds have garnered the attention of both readers and collectors alike; however, some individuals go far beyond the rest and are willing to do (or pay) just about anything to get their hands on a copy of some of the rarer issues. Comic condition is typically based on a 10.0 point grading scale (CGC), decreasing as follows: 10.0 GM Gem Mint, 9.9 M Mint, 9.8 NM/M Near Mint/Mint, 9.6 NM+ Near Mint+, 9.4 NM Near Mint, 9.2 NM- Near Mint-, 9.0 VF/NM Very Fine/Near Mint, 8.5 VF+ Very Fine+, 8.0 VF Very Fine, 7.5 VF- Very Fine-, 7.0 FN/VF Fine/Very Fine, 6.5 FN+ Fine+, 6.0 FN Fine, 5.5 FN- Fine-, 5.0 VG/FN Very Good/Fine, 4.5 VG+ Very Good+, 4.0 VG Very Good, 3.5 VG- Very Good-, 3.0 GD/VG Good/Very Good, 2.5 GD+ Good+, 2.0 GD Good, 1.8 GD- Good-, 1.5 FR/GD Fair/Good, 1.0 FR Fair, 0.5 PR Poor. Most high value collectors wont look at anything below a 9.0, and have been known to spend over a million on a single comic book. Here’s a list of the top 10 most expensive ever sold.

  2. “Captain America Comics” #1, CGC 9.2 – $343,057. Originally sold for 10 cents. Re-sold in 2011. First appearance of Captain America.

  3. “Marvel Comics” #1, CGC 9.0 – $350,000. Originally sold for 10 cents. Re-sold in 2003. First comic published by Marvel company.

  4. “Tales of Suspense” #39, CGC 9.6 – $375,000. Originally sold for 12 cents. Re-sold in 2012. First appearance of Iron Man.

  5. “Flash Comics” #1, CGC 9.6 – $450,000. Originally sold for 10 cents. Re-sold in 2010. First appearance of Golden Age Flash

  6. “X-Men” #1, CGC 9.8 – $492,937.50. Originally sold for 12 cents. Re-sold in 2012. First issue of the X-Men.

  7. “Batman” #1, CGC 9.2 – $567,625. Originally sold for 10 cents. Re-sold in 2013. First appearance of the Joker and Catwoman.

  8. “Detective Comics” #27, CGC 8.0 – $1,075,000. Originally sold for 10 cents. Re-sold in 2010. First appearance of Batman.

  9. “Amazing Fantasy” #15, CGC 9.6 – $1,100,000. Originally sold for 12 cents. Re-sold in 2011. First appearance of Spiderman.
